Something hit me the other day while I was mindlessly scrolling through my phone. I had opened an app to check one simple thing… and before I knew it, 30 minutes had passed by and I was deep in a comparison spiral that left me feeling drained, anxious, and far from peaceful. Honestly, I wanted to crawl back into bed and just rot the day away.
Has that ever happened to you?
It’s so easy to lose track of where our attention is going. The world is noisy, fast, and full of things that seem urgent but don’t really matter. If we’re not careful, we start feeding our hearts with things that leave us spiritually malnourished and overwhelmed.
The Power of Our Attention
Where we place our attention shapes what grows in our lives. What we focus on—whether it’s worry, the opinions of others, to-do lists, or even our own fears—begins to take up space in our minds and hearts. Over time, it determines the direction we’re heading.
God cares deeply about where our focus lies. Scripture is full of reminders to lift our eyes, guard our hearts, and renew our minds.
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” — Hebrews 12:2
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” — Colossians 3:2
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” — Isaiah 26:3
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” — Romans 12:2
The Distractions We Don’t Always See
Sometimes our attention drifts without us even realizing it. We start the day with good intentions, but suddenly we’re consumed by things like:
The pressure to perform or prove ourselves
Endlessly checking notifications
Selfishness
Comparison on social media
Trying to keep up or do more
These patterns—values, mindsets, and habits that are normal in our culture—can easily shape us and pull us away from God’s best for us.
“Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.” — Psalm 119:37
Refocusing on What Truly Matters
So how do we realign our hearts and minds? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Small shifts in our focus can make a big difference:
Start the morning with 5 minutes of quiet prayer or Scripture (before you check your phone!)
Create space in your day for stillness (even if it’s just a few deep breaths)
Practice gratitude—write down 3 things God is doing right now
Replace mindless scrolling with intentional worship or reflection
Swap podcasts or doomscrolling for encouraging ones that point you to God
Ask yourself: Does what I’m consuming draw me closer to peace, or pull me into anxiety, comparison, or fear?
I’ve always enjoyed winding down with true crime podcasts or audiobooks at night. While I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with that, I’ve noticed that when I switch to a faith-based podcast instead, I end up feeling more grounded and connected to God the next day.
It’s made me pause and wonder—just because something isn’t “bad,” does that mean it’s good for my spirit? I’m still processing that, but I know I want to be more intentional about what I let shape my thoughts, especially before bed.
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” — Isaiah 26:3
Reflection Questions
Take a few moments to sit with these:
What’s been getting the most of my attention lately?
Is it drawing me closer to God—or leaving me anxious or empty?
What small shift can I make today to reset my focus?
A Gentle Challenge
This week, try a simple “focus reset.” Maybe that means taking a short break from something that’s been distracting you. Or adding a rhythm of rest or Scripture into your day.
Ask God to help you fix your eyes on what truly matters. He’s not asking for perfection—just presence. You don’t have to “fix” your thoughts on your own. God does the transforming; we just have to show up, create space, and let His Word do the work.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33
Final Thoughts
You were never meant to carry the weight of the world. When your attention is grounded in Christ, peace follows. Let’s be women who look up—not just around.
